While I understand the importance of convenience, at the same time it plays a major role to our lack of knowledge and increased laziness as a human species. Don't get me wrong, I'm not an extremist who believes in anarchy neither, however we are lazier, less knowledgeable, and less patient than we ever were in our human history. We are completely dependent on society to provide our needs, and at the same time spending more money than we need to so that we may have that convenience. Unfortunately, it would require a disaster of of biblical proportions to force us to become self-sufficient, but if we start with the basics now we can advance as a species within the next century.
For example, here is a list of some things we shouldn't need to pay for:
- Produce (growing fruits & vegetables is free & provides oxygen)
- Electricity (solar, wind, magnetic, it's clean & free peoples)
- Tobacco & Alchohol (keep in mind it's illegal unless you have the proper paperwork)
All three can be produced by anyone of average intelligence who can follow directions. It's not exactly simple to grow plants, however it's not rocket science neither. Installing solar panels on your roof to power your home will not only provide free electricity but also generates revenue (power companies buy excess electricity). Imagine how much money you could save a month just by not having an electricity bill, and not having to pay for produce at your super market. It may not be much compared to your total monthly expenses but it's still a significant amount. You could use that extra revenue to pay off your debts quicker, build a college fund for your children, or just put it in your savings account and let it build interest. These are just a few small steps to becoming truly self-sufficient, and small steps with patience will make your goals a reality.
So take your first small step by farming your own produce! If you lack space don't worry because starting small is better than not starting at all. More importantly you will gain experience and knowledge for when you decide to grow a much bigger garden. If it's Winter time where you live then start plants indoor and move them outside just before Spring. If you have no outdoor access to grow, then you can always grow indoors using Hydroponics or Soiless medium.
